99 Cents Only Stores is an American price-point retailer chain based in Commerce, California. It offers “a combination of closeout branded merchandise, general merchandise, and fresh foods.” Previously, the store offered all products at 99¢ or less. The store was founded by Dave Gold in1982, who inherited a tiny liquor store in downtown Los Angeles and ran a test selling bottles of wine at a fixed price-point of 99 cents. Back then in 1982, Dave and Sherry Gold decided to open their first 99 Cent store in Los Angeles. As a celebration of their first grand opening and also as a marketing strategy, Dave decided to sell television for 99 cents to 13 families who first show up to their opening. To Dave’s surprise there were about 300 people who showed up to stand in a line and waited for the opening.
This got huge attention from the media, and more than 10 TV outlets covered the store’s first day. The success of this first grand opening inspired a tradition, with new stores continuing for years to offer 99-cent deals for televisions and other products.
The company also operates Bargain Wholesale, which sells wholesale to retailers across the United States and exports to more than 15 countries from showrooms in Los Angeles. It also exhibits at trade shows in Las Vegas and Chicago.
