Bitdefender Threat Scanner Review

Bitdefender is among the best antivirus scanners for Mac that has consistently high malware detection rates and an array of other helpful security features. The program is not without faults.

The default interface is easy-to-navigate and divides features into 3 categories: Privacy, Protection, and Utilities. The Protection tab is a focus on the features you’d expect from an antivirus suite, such as real-time scanning, firewall monitoring, and ransomware countermeasures. The Privacy tab outlines ways to stay safe on the internet, including an encrypted web browser which runs websites in the sandbox, to keep malware from infecting your regular browser. And the Utilities tab is a place to find optimization tools as well as a file shredder that overwrites files using a special algorithm, making them unrecoverable even when deleted.

Premium plans also come with a password manager, as well as a solution called “Anti-Tracker” which can block web services from tracking you inordinately. The program comes with a vulnerability scanner that can detect old applications and passwords that are not secure, or Windows updates that haven’t been applied. It also offers a quick custom scan which only takes five minutes, which is much more quickly than competitors like Norton and TotalAV.

The only issue with the application is its slow install process which can be very frustrating for users who want to begin right away. Additionally, the app’s “Reveal in the Finder” option doesn’t work this is a bizarre absence for an antivirus application that competes with rival applications that can accomplish exactly the same thing in only few clicks.
