On August fourth, 1930, a 46-year old Cullen made his way to America’s first store, King Kullen Grocery Company. The Smithsonian Institute recognizes King Kullen as America’s first general store, as it was “quick to satisfy each of the five measures that characterize the advanced general store: separate divisions; self-administration; rebate valuing; chain showcasing; and volume managing.”
